Honors Chemistry Requirements


Honors Chemistry Project (2nd/4th Grading Period):


(100 pts.) Lab: Synthesis of Aspirin. This is a 3-day exercise which will be documented by a formal lab report.
(200 pts.) Independent Research Report: This independent research project will be on a subject relevant to the course topic and of the student's choosing. The report will be presented in the form of a web page (on CD-ROM or flash drive). Details will be given in class.

(1%) Organic Chemistry Nomenclature Unit (1% of 2nd Grading Period grade)
Instruction: 1 class period - 90 minutes
Topics to include: Nomenclature, Organic Functional Groups
Assessment: Quiz (counting for 1% of 2nd Grading Period grade)

(1%) Oxidation/Reduction and Electrochemistry.
Instruction: 1 class period - 90 minutes
Topics to include: redox reactions, oxidation and reduction concepts, basic electrochemistry
Assessment: Quiz

(1%) Environmental Chemistry Unit (1% of 2nd Grading Period grade)
Instruction: 1 class period - 90 minutes
Topics to include: Acid Deposition, Industrial/Photochemical Smog, Ozone Depletion
Assessment: Quiz (counting for 1% of 2nd Grading Period grade)

Grading for these assignments:
While the percent of the 2nd Grading Period for each topic has been determined, the individual classroom teacher will determine how many points each assignment is worth. At the conclusion of the 2nd Grading Period, the teacher will determine how many points have been accumulated by students in his/her honors classes (e.g., 950) exclusive of the above assignments. Eight percent of the total 2nd Grading Period grade shall be the above assignments. Since 950 pts constitutes 92% of the grade, then the total number of points including these special assignments = 950/0.92 = 1033 pts.;

1033 - 950 = 83 pts.; 83/8 = 10.4 pts/1%

Thus,
Organic Chem. (1%) = 10.4 pts.
Environmental Chem. (1%) = 10.4 pts.
The Aspirin Project (6%) = 62.4 pts.
